YOUNG ACADEMY STATUTES

CHAPTER I: DEFINITION

 

Article 1. The Young Academy is a Special Commission of the Colombian Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences, established by resolution 03 of 2019 of the Board of Directors. It gathers young artists and scientists with merits in their professional performance. It is a space of convergence in which intellectual, cultural, and social differences can be creatively integrated. Based on an interdisciplinary dialogue of young researchers, the aim is to facilitate the social appropriation of science and new scientific strategies and create collaborations aimed at generating and developing projects and supporting new approaches to solving problems of national and international importance. The Young Academy complements the Academy’s action spaces to reach the objectives of its missionary work.

 

CHAPTER II: MISSION

 

Article 2. To provide new perspectives to the Colombian Academy of Exact, Physical, and Natural Sciences, the Young Academy will focus on the following mission lines: dissemination and promotion of science and technology, interdisciplinary exchange, science policy, and insertion into scientific life.

 

CHAPTER III: VISION

 

Article 3. The Young Academy will be a reference in the dissemination and promotion of science, disciplinary exchange, scientific policy, and the insertion of young researchers. It will create and participate in spaces for interdisciplinarity through the convergence of young artists and scientists with equitable regional, disciplinary, and gender representation.

 

CHAPTER IV: OBJECTIVES

 

Article 4. The Young Academy aims to facilitate new scientific strategies and encourage collaborations aimed at generating and developing projects and proposing and supporting new approaches to solving problems of national and international importance.

 

Article 5. The Young Academy seeks to promote debate regarding proposals related to public policies on science, technology, and innovation and to disseminate the content of said policies.

 

Article 6. The Young Academy will promote the dissemination and appropriation of science as an element of culture and economic and social development, emphasizing national results.

 

Article 7. The Young Academy will promote the exchange of scientific, social, and cultural knowledge, establishing links with scientists abroad, including the Colombian scientific diaspora.

 

Article 8. The Young Academy will identify the problems, opportunities, and challenges of young scientists at the beginning of their careers and offer guidance to address them.

 

Article 9. The Young Academy will support the missionary work of the Academy and its regional chapters.

 

CHAPTER V: OF THE MEMBERS OF THE YOUNG ACADEMY

 

Article 10. Members of the Young Academy are called members and are elected by an internal committee. The selection of new members will be based on the candidates’ achievements, their publications and / or scientific, academic, and outreach activities in their social context, and their willingness to contribute to the Academy. The selection committee will seek to maximize the breadth of regional and international, disciplinary, and gender representation.

 

Article 11. Artists and scientists under 45 years old may be elected members of the Young Academy. New members will be nominated by an Academic or a member of the Young Academy and may also self-nominate.

 

Paragraph: In the case of self-nominations, candidates must attach two letters of academic recommendation.

 

Paragraph: If an applicant exceeds the age of 45, applications are invited with justification, and the Committee will evaluate them.

 

Article 12. Members of the Young Academy will be bound for five years, non-renewable. After this period, the members become former members of the Young Academy.

 

Article 13. The selection committee will be made up of 5 members of the Young Academy who will carry out the evaluation process of the resumes of the candidates presented two times during the year.

 

Paragraph. The methodology of the evaluation committee integrates the assessment of criteria such as area of training, academic career, academic experience about the Young Academy, participation in academic networks, participation in activities of social appropriation of knowledge, strengthening of the Young Academy in regions, and potential for collaboration with the mission of the Young Academy.

 

Paragraph. The evaluation committee’s methodology may consider relevant aspects of the applicants’ personal lives in evaluating their academic careers.

 

Article 15. A member may resign from being part of the Young Academy by written communication.

 

Paragraph. Once during the membership period, a member may take a leave of up to one year’s duration from active membership if they are unable to contribute to Academia Joven activities due to well-justified events, providing written notification of this request.

 

Article 16. The Young Academy may count on advice from the Academy.

 

CHAPTER VI: OBLIGATIONS AND RIGHTS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE YOUNG ACADEMY

 

Article 17. It is the duties of the members to know and comply with the statutes of the Young Academy, contribute to the achievement of its objectives, attend sessions, collaborate and participate in its tasks and activities, and cooperate in maintaining a climate of mutual respect among all members. 

 

Article 18. Anyone who seriously harms the dignity of the commission and the Academy will lose their membership status. The members of the Young Academy will decide in consultation with the Academy.

 

Article 19. The following are the rights of the members of the Young Academy: (i) Be a member of the Young Academy and be referred to as such where appropriate, (ii) Participate in the activities of the Young Academy, (iii) Have a voice and vote in the sessions and meetings of the Young Academy.

 

CHAPTER VII: THE ORGANIZATION OF THE YOUNG ACADEMY

 

Article 20. The Young Academy will be in charge of conceiving the structure and operation of the organization, defining the short and medium-term objectives, and establishing the work areas that it considers priority.

 

Article 21. Attendance at the Young Academy sessions may be in person or not. There will be non-face-to-face attendance at the assembly when, through appropriate technologies, its members can deliberate and decide through synchronous communication or participate with their vote in the decision-making of the Young Academy. Members will meet at least twice a year.

 

Article 22. The Young Academy will establish work committees corresponding to the number of mission lines for the development and fulfillment of its objectives of dissemination and appropriation of science, scientific policy, and interdisciplinary exchange, and also for other specific missions. Each working committee will have a primary representative and a substitute.

 

Article 23. The Young Academy will have two representatives whom the members will elect for one year, renewable up to an additional period.

 

CHAPTER VIII: MISCELLANEOUS PROVISIONS

 

Article 24. These statutes may be modified as necessary in a session of the Young Academy.

 

Article 25. This statute will come into force on the date of its approval.
