Reseña Biográfica: Nació en Bogotá donde realizó sus estudios básicos y universitarios. Estudió Biología en la Universidad Nacional de Colombia y realizó su trabajo de grado en la biología reproductiva del lagarto de la Sabana de Bogotá Phenacosaurus heterodermus bajo la dirección de los profesores Gloria Romero de Pérez y Jaime Ramírez Perilla. Ambas áreas de investigación (Herpetología y Biología Reproductiva) que enmarcaron su trabajo de investigación de pregrado se constituyeron en sus áreas básicas de trabajo durante toda su carrera académica. Su interés por la Herpetología la llevó a acercarse al Profesor Pedro M. Ruiz Carranza en el Laboratorio de Anfibios del Instituto de Ciencias de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia, donde como voluntaria trabajó durante varios años; allí se preparó en la colecta, fijación y preservación del material biológico asociado a las colecciones, desarrollando con creces su interés por el estudio de la biología de los anfibios. En 1988 viajó con la recomendación del Prof. Ruiz-Carranza a Tucumán (Argentina) para unirse al Instituto de Herpetología de la Fundación Miguel Lillo y bajo la dirección del Profesor Raymond Laurent desarrolló su tesis doctoral en la biología reproductiva de varias especies de lagartijas del género Liolaemus. Los estudios doctorales realizados en la Universidad Nacional de Tucumán se realizaron con el auspicio de una beca del CONICET. Sin embargo, los años en los que hizo su estancia doctoral coincidieron con una de las peores crisis económicas y sociales que ha sufrido la Argentina, por lo tanto, aunque contó con una beca del CONICET, debió recurrir a la ayuda de su director, colegas del Instituto, su familia en Colombia y algunos investigadores en USA para tener los fondos necesarios para su mantenimiento y para el trabajo de campo y laboratorio de su tesis doctoral. Ésta fue evaluada con la máxima calificación otorgada a las tesis doctorales en esa casa de estudios y fue publicada en varios artículos que se constituyeron en referentes de los estudios sobre la biología reproductiva de lagartijas en Suramérica. En 1992 obtuvo su título doctoral y regresó a Colombia vinculándose de inmediato como profesora con la Escuela de Biología de la Universidad Industrial de Santander en Bucaramanga donde ha trabajado desde entonces. Su vida personal se enriqueció también en Bucaramanga, tiene dos hijos profesionales, uno de ellos siguió sus pasos y es biólogo-herpetólogo. En la UIS creó y dirige el Laboratorio de Biología Reproductiva de Vertebrados y redefinió, enriqueció y mantiene la Colección de Herpetología del Museo de Historia Natural de la UIS. Desde su vinculación como profesora ha dirigido a más de 60 estudiantes de pregrado en el desarrollo de sus tesis de pregrado, incluyendo una decena de estudiantes de otras universidades del país y recientemente con la creación de la Maestría en Biología de la UIS a varios estudiantes de maestría y una tesis doctoral de una estudiante de la Universidad de La Laguna en España. Realizó una estancia postdoctoral entre 2001 y 2002 en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México y su año sabático en 2010 en la Universidad de Sydney en Australia. A su vez, ha recibido a varios investigadores y estudiantes de varios países y de otras regiones del país, quienes han recibido entrenamiento en técnicas de investigación o revisado los ejemplares de la Colección de Herpetología. Producto de los proyectos de investigación que ha liderado y codirigido, de las investigaciones realizadas con sus estudiantes y colegas y de sus estancias en laboratorios en el exterior ha publicado más de 100 artículos en revistas especializadas y publicado varios capítulos de libros. Ha sido invitada como investigadora ponente en varios eventos especializados en el país y en el exterior y es editora asociada de un par de revistas nacionales y otro tanto a nivel de Latinoamérica, además de ser evaluadora de manuscritos para más de 30 revistas internacionales y de tesis de maestría y doctorales, así como proyectos de investigación del país y el exterior. Es la investigadora líder del Grupo de Estudios en Biodiversidad de la Universidad Industrial de Santander (categorizado como grupo A1 de Colciencias) y figura como investigadora Senior dentro de la categorización de investigadores de Colciencias (2016 y 2017).
