RODOLFO LLINÁS RIASCOS

Rodolfo Llinás Riascos nació en Bogotá el 16 de diciembre de 1934, en el seno de una familia de alta posición social y reconocida tradición científica. Sobrino de alcalde, nieto de psiquiatra e hijo de médico, Llinás es conocido como un hombre sensible, tímido, de habla pausada y excepcional inteligencia. Obtuvo su título de Médico en la Pontificia Universidad Javeriana de Bogotá en 1959 y el Ph. D. en Neurofisiología en la Australian National University, Canberra, en 1966.

Inició su carrera profesional en 1959 como instructor de neurofisiología en el Departamento de Fisiología de la Facultad de Medicina en la Universidad Nacional de Colombia.Entre 1960 y 1961 trabajó como Research Fellow en el Departamento de Neurocirugía del Hospital General de la Escuela de Medicina de la Universidad de Harvard, de donde se trasladó al Departamento de Fisiología de la Universidad de Minnesota en Minneapolis con una beca del Instituto Nacional de Salud de los Estados Unidos (NIH), donde permaneció entre 1961 y 1963. En 1963 asumió como Investigador del Departamento de Fisiología del Instituto de Estudios Avanzados de la Australian National University, y en 1965 regresó a la Universidad de Minnesota como Profesor Asociado. Allí permaneció hasta 1966, año en que fue nombrado miembro del Instituto para Investigaciones Biomédicas, AMA/ERF, en Chicago, Illinois. En 1968 fue elegido Jefe del Departamento de Neurofisiología del mismo Instituto, cargo que desempeñó hasta 1970. De 1970 a 1976 fue Profesor y Jefe del Departamento de Fisiología y Biofísica de la División de Neurobiología de la Escuela de Medicina de la Universidad de Iowa en Iowa City. Durante esos años también fue profesor de los cursos de verano en Neurofisiología en el Laboratorio de Biología Marina de Woods Hole, Massachusetts. En 1976 la New York University lo nombró Profesor y Director del Departamento de Fisiología y Neurociencia de la Escuela de Medicina , cargo que ocupa en la actualidad. Desde 1985 ostenta el título de Thomas and Suzanne Murphy Professor of Neuroscience en la Escuela de Medicina de NYU.

El Dr. Llinás es uno de los científicos que mayores aportes ha realizado al programa de la Neurociencia. Sus descubrimientos son capítulo obligado no sólo para neurofisiólogos, sino también para psiquiatras, neurocirujanos, ingenieros electrónicos e incluso matemáticos. La suya es la primera teoría general de cómo podría funcionar el cerebro, y por lo mismo una de las explicaciones más completas y articuladas sobre la mente humana desde una perspectiva biológica. Desde su concepción, pensar es un acto computacional, en el sentido de que es veloz, que requiere muchos elementos, que posiblemente es eléctrico y que se puede simular en otros sistemas. Computacional es, según dice, una propiedad de medición que tiene que ver con relaciones geométricas, es la función prodigiosa del cerebro y, a escala, la de los computadores.

Varias veces postulado al Premio Nobel de Medicina, es el único colombiano que ha sido designado miembro de la Academia Nacional de Ciencias de los Estados Unidos, máximo escenario de la ciencia occidental. Es, además, miembro de la Academia Nacional de Medicina de Colombia, de la American Academy of Arts and Sciences, de la American Philosophical Society, de la Real Academia Nacional de Medicina de España y de la Academia Francesa de Ciencias. La Academia Colombiana de Ciencias Exactas, Físicas y Naturales lo distinguió con el título de Miembro Honorario.

Posee título de Doctor Honoris Causa de las Universidades españolas de Salamanca (1985), Barcelona (1993) y Complutense de Madrid (1997), de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia (1994), de la Universidad de los Andes, Bogotá (1998), Toyama University Medical School, Japón (2005) y Universidad de Pavia, Italia (2006).

A lo largo de su brillante trayectoria ha recibido numerosos homenajes, medallas y reconocimientos en paises como Suecia, Inglaterra, Francia, España, Estados Unidos y Suiza, entre otros. Muy temprano en su carrera recibió el John C. Krantz Award de la Escuela de Medicina de la Universidad de Meryland (1976). Rockefeller University reconoció sus calidades academicas y científicas con el F. O. Schmitt Award in Neuroscience en 1989. En 1991 le fue otorgada la Albert Einstein Gold Medal Award in Science por UNESCO. Ha sido Profesor Invitado en varias universidades y laboratorios de gran prestigio como el College de France, King´s College en Londres, Marine Biological Laboratory en Woods Hole, MA., University of California at Irvine yKarolinska Institutet, Estocolmo,

Su labor editorial comenzó en 1974 cuando fue nombrado Editor Jefe de la revista Neurociencia, cargo que desempeñó hasta el año 2000. Además ha sido miembro de los comités editoriales de otras publicaciones como Journal of Neurobiology, Journal of Theoretical Neurobiology y Thalamus and Related Systems.
