ALPER, HOWARD

Howard Alper nació el 17 de octubre de 1941 en Montreal, Quebec, Canadá. Realizó estudios de pregrado en la Sir George Williams University donde obtuvo el grado de Bachelor of Science (B. Sc.) en 1963. Algunos años más tarde, en 1967, recibió el título de Ph. D. en McGill University, también en Canadá. Actualmente es Distinguished University Professor en la Universidad de Ottawa, a la cual ha estado vinculado desde 1975.Las investigaciones que ha realizado a lo largo de su carrera profesional cubren tanto la química orgánica como la inorgánica, con posibles aplicaciones en las industrias farmacéutica, petroquímica y de productos químicos. Ha descubierto nuevas reacciones usando catálisis homogénea, catálisis de transferencia de fase y catálisis heterogénea (por ej. arcillas, dendrímeros). También ha usado ligandos quirales en reacciones de cicloadición y carbonilación catalizadas por metales y ha tenido éxito en la preparación de productos de valor agregado en formas famacológicamente activas. Ha publicado 527 trabajos científicos, tiene 37 patentes y ha editado varios libros.

El Dr. Alper ha recibido varias becas muy prestigiosas como la E.W.R. Steacie (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, 1980‑82), Guggenheim (1985‑86), y Killam (1986‑88).Entre los principales premios que le han sido otorgados están el Premio Alcan de Química Inorgánica (1986), el Premio Bader de Química Orgánica (1990), el Premio Steacie de Química, (1993), todos ellos de la Sociedad Canadiense de Química. El Chemical Institute de Canada (CIC) le entregó el Premio Catálisis (1984), la Medalla Montreal (2003) y la Medalla CIC (1997), su más alto honor. También recibió el Premio Urgel‑Archambault (ACFAS) en ciencias físicas e ingeniería.

En el año 2000 el Gobernador General de Canadá le entregó la primera Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal en Ciencia e Ingeniería. Al año siguiente, recibió el Premio Nacional al Mérito por contribuciones a las cienciasde la vida y en el 2002 el Le Sueur Memorial Award de la Sociedad de la Industria Química del Reino Unido. En 2004 fue elegido Miembro Honorario de la Sociedad de Investigación en Química (Chemical Research Society) de India y en 2006 Miembro Honorario del Instituto de Química de Canadá.

Ha participado en varios comités del NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council) de Canadá, y como presidente de juntas y comités como el Partnership Group for Science and Engineering (PAGSE), el Consejo de Academias Canadienses, la Canadian Research Knowledge Network y el Instituto Steacie de Ciencias Moleculares. Fue también Ejecutivo Visitante en el Centro Internacional de Investigaciones para el Desarrollo en el periodo 2006-2010.

En 1996 fue nombrado Miembro Titular de la Academia Europea de Artes, Ciencias y Humanidades. También fue nombrado Oficial de la Orden de Canadá en 1999 y en 2002 recibió el Premio de Oficial de la Orden Nacional al Mérito que le fue entregado por el Presidente de la República de Francia. Fue nombrado Presidente de la Sociedad Real de Canadá para un periodo de dos años que comenzó en noviembre de 2001 y actualmente es el Secretario para Asuntos Exteriores (Forign Secretary). En 2004 fue elegido para un periodo de tres años como Co-presidente de la Red Interamericana de Academias de Ciencias (IANAS). En diciembre de 2006, fue elegido Co-presidente del Panel InterAcademias: la Red Global de Academias de Ciencias (IAP) para un periodo de tres años, y en enero de 2010 fue reelegido como Co-presidente para un segundo periodo de tres años. También en 2010, fue nombrado para un periodo de tres años en el Comité Asesor para la Ciencia y la Ingeniería Internacional de la National Science Foundation de los Estados Unidos, y ha pertenecido al Comité Asesor para Ciencia del Foro Económico Mundial, a la Junta Directiva del Instituto Africano de Ciencias Matemáticas-Próxima Iniciativa Darwin, a la Junta Directiva de la Academia Global de Jóvenes, Vice-presidente del RIKEN Advisory Council, y a la Junta Asesora Internacional del Foro Económico Regional Europeo. En 2007 fue nombrado Presidente del Consejo del Gobierno de Canadá para Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación (STIC), el cual asesora al Gabinete y al Primer Ministro en temas de ciencia, tecnología e innovación; este Consejo también produce cada dos años informes sobre el Estado de la Nación que sirven como referencia sobre el desempeño de Canadá en relación con el resto del mundo. En diciembre de 2010 el gobierno de Canadá lo reeligió para un segundo periodo como presidente del STIC.
